High School Learn to Row

2011 on water cancelled (high school indoor still on---see fall and winter indoor  info above)

The High School Learn to Row program is designed to give you the opportunity to experience High School Rowing. The program consists of on land training and two weeks of on water training. On land training start times and intensity vary by school but some start as early as January and train as much as four times a week. On water training begins late March or early April - as soon as the ice is off the lake.

Those from PDCS, SCS and HT  starting in April will all be in one group with the HT leader, Carla Aiken.

With the High School Learn to Row program, you will learn fitness training, rowing technique, equipment and safety. If you decide to sign up for the remainder of the high school rowing season, an additional  upgrade fee is all that is required and information is on the registration form.

You will be amazed how quickly you can learn the basics and how much you will enjoy working out with others who have a similar interest!

Adult Learn to Row
2011 cancelled

(Row for Heart)2009

Our *Adult Learn to Row program* is conducted in partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation <http://www.heartandstroke.ca>.

In one on land and seven on the water sessions, you will learn the basic skills of
rowing, equipment handling and safety. The program will conclude with a
fun regatta where your crew will race against other Learn to Row crews
just like yours over a 500 meter distance. Pledges collected by
participants will go to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and prizes will
be awarded.

You are encouraged to enter a crew of five or ten persons – perhaps some
friends from your workplace or club. In that way you can train as a
member of a crew in preparation for the Silver Lake

Row for Heart
Regatta – definitely NOT the Olympics! If you don’t have a group, don’t
worry! You may register individually and will be boated with a crew of
other novices like yourself. This program is an exciting introduction to
rowing and a pre-requisite for those inexperienced rowers considering
participation in the Adult Recreational Rowing Program.

Join us for a "life-changing" adventure as you experience 8 weeks of
'Learn to Row' lessons in support of the vital research funded by the
Heart and Stroke Foundation.

No experience is required as a full orientation for all crews will kick
off lessons on Wed May 20, 2009 with on-water lessons beginning the week
of May 25, 2009.

As event hosts, Silver Lake Rowing Club will also provide you with the
opportunity to showcase your new skills at a final Regatta on July 19,
2009. Regatta participants fundraise on behalf of the Heart and Stroke
Foundation and can receive great prizes!

The registration fee is $140 per person and you can register as an
individual or in a crew of 5 or 10 people!

Thank-you for helping to find answers. For Life
.

Club and High Performance Competitive Rowing
2011/2012 on water TBA

Brief  history on our club rowing program and it's building success: We bring our best rowers together from across Norfolk and Haldimand to represent the Silver Lake Rowing Club at regattas held during the summer months. The high performance rowing program begins during the high school year and continues through the summer and fall; all the information can be obtained on the document link above.
In 2004, our crews won three silver and one bronze medals at the ROWONTARIO Championships held in Welland.
In 2005 many more medals were won in a variety of races including boating our first junior B and senior B girls quads that managed to win CORA medals.  We were proud to have Laura Fisher make the Junior National team and Anna Ardiel obtain a full ride scholarship to University of Louisville in Kentucky.
2006 and 2007 saw a lot of success for some of our largest summer teams yet. Refer to the Hall of Recognition page for details . This is the first time Silver Lake has had a crew (quad) final at Henley 2 years in a row.

**********************************************************

CONGRATULATIONS!  TO Laura Fisher for making the  2005 & 2006 junior national team in the women's four.....a first for a SLRC athlete. She is now on a scholarship at Duke University.
CONGRATULATIONS!  TO Ian Edwards, Robbie Puddy and Terry Lovegrove for making the 2007 junior development team and participating in the CanAmMex regatta.

CONGRATULATIONS!  TO Ian Edwards fro making the junior development team and participating in the CanAmMex games again  in 2008.

Recreational Rowing - Youth Rowing Camp

2011 cancelled

Our Youth Rowing Camp is open to students entering Grades 7, 8, 9 or 10(not older then 16 in 2008). Emphasis is on skill development and fun! You must have participated in the Youth Learn to Row program to be eligible for registration. Those who have completed the Youth Learn to Row program in previous years do not need to do it again. But you are more than welcome to come and help out while earning community service hours.

In the Rowing Camp, you will fine tune rowing skills and enjoy fun competitions within your group as well as possibly against a visiting club. The program is held during the day from mid July to August. The program may wrap up with participation at a weekend regatta.

Our youth rowers continue to impress at the Tops and Bottoms regatta in Mississauga. Congratulations to the "2003" youth rowers (coach: Lindsay Turner) who won 7 out of the 10 races entered!! And to the 2004 crews (coach Erika Jarowicz, Brock Organ) who won 6 out of 9 races entered! And to the 2005 crews (coach Anna Ardiel, Robbie Fairley) who won 5 out of 8 races entered - many as novice rowers!; and to the 2006 crews (coach Jeff Puddy, Shannon Page) who won 5 of 9 entries plus an "exhibition" win. In 2007 (Laura Fisher and Ross Fairley)  SLRC had 6 wins of 9 entries and most were novice rowers. No report from Dan and Robbie received for 2008. In 2009 Silver Lake attendance grew to over 30 youth racing  winning 8 of 11 entries (under Tyler Wilson, manager and Samy Fairley, assistant coaching).  But most importantly everyone had fun and enjoyed the excitement of racing and has developed good sportsmanship in the process.

Now in its 8th year, our Adult Recreational Rowing program continues to be popular amongst adult women and men of all ages. The Adult Learn to Row / Row for Heart program (see above for details) or rowing experience is a requirement to be eligible for registration.

We encourage all our adult rowers to establish crews and row together with the same people on a regular basis. This makes it much easier to learn rowing skills and provides a more enjoyable rowing experience for everyone.   see Archive for more info on past
