Valley Heights Wins Bronze at London Regatta
Valley Heights captured a bronze medal at the Western Ontario Secondary School Association Regatta in London on Saturday.
Mohamad Kayed, Jeff Bergen, Ben Heinrichs, Marc Wall and Val Montrose as coxswain placed third in the Men’s Lightweight Cox Four event by finishing only two and a half boat lengths back from first place. The Women’s Lightweight Cox Four of Karla Martens, Val Montrose, Christine Atchison, Emily Main and Ricky Giesbrecht as coxswain from Valley Heights also advanced to the final by placing second in their heat. They narrowly missed bronze by placing fourth in the final.
Kayla Horvat of Holy Trinity raced in the Senior Women’s Single event and placed first in her heat to advance to the finals. In the finals, Horvat place fourth.
Also competing in London were Sandor Macsai, Geoff Anderson, Norman Brett, Jake Martens and Emily Barnim as coxswain in the Senior Men’s Cox Four event. Both Valley Heights’ cox fours combined to compete in the Men’s Eight event only 30 minutes following one of their races and placed sixth.
According to Valley Heights’ coach Larry Wiebe local crews from Valley Heights as well as Port Dover, Simcoe Composite and Holy Trinity will be attending the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association regatta being held in St. Catharines next weekend. This regatta marks the end of the high school rowing season.
