Record Entries at Silver Lake Regatta
Local high school rowing crews competed against crews from across southern Ontario at the 11th annual Silver Lake High School Regatta held in Port Dover on May 2nd and came away with gold, silver and bronze medals.
According to Regatta Chair Brian LeMoine “We had a record number of entries again this year with over 20 high schools participating. Races ran like clockwork every ten minutes from 9 am to 3 pm largely due to the hard work of many volunteers”.
Mother Theresa of London won the Jenna Stark total points trophy with 84 points earned by seventeen entries. Glendale High School from Tillsonburg won the Tom and Reta Dover trophy that recognizes the school with the highest number of points earned per entry. Glendale crews medaled in each of the four events they entered. Holy Trinity had a strong showing placing second both in total points and points per entry. With eleven entries, Holy Trinity won four gold and one silver medal. Valley Heights captured two silver medals and one bronze while Simcoe Composite came away with one silver and one bronze. According to coach Sue Fairley, “We were pleased with our results and the fact we came second overall in both total points and efficiency. That’s quite an achievement. We’ll see how we do over the longer distances in the coming regattas.”
The Silver Lake Regatta is the first regatta of the season for most rowers and has become a popular regatta for novice crews with a reputation for being well run and an excellent venue for watching racing. Next weekend, high school rowers are off to St. Catharines to compete in the Mother’s Day Regatta.
