U.S. Rowing Scholarship for Anna Ardiel
Anna Ardiel
a graduate of Simcoe Composite School has accepted a full rowing scholarship at
the University of Louisville in Kentucky where she plans to study Exercise
Science.
Ardiel has been rowing with the Silver Lake Rowing Club since 2002. This year, she won the Senior Women’s 65 kg Single event at the Canadian Secondary School Regatta Association Championships and was a finalist in the Junior Women’s Single event at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. She dominated the long distance rowing circuit in Ontario and New York state this fall winning in all three races entered.
Ardiel first came to the attention of the University of Louisville coaches at the Canadian championships in St. Catharines. Louisville’s Assistant Coach Laurie Featherstone followed up with a visit to the Silver Lake Rowing Club in the summer and continued to monitor Ardiel’s performances throughout the rowing season. According to Featherstone, “Anna has a great spirit and is a good racer. I think she will develop in college just being pushed by the other athletes. I am quite excited about Anna as she has a lot of positives and is a unique person who could add a lot to our college program.”
“This is also a real compliment for Sue Fairley, Anna’s coach” said Jim Dover President of the Silver Lake Rowing Club.” Sue has been instrumental in Anna’s development from the beginning.” Fairley who coaches high school crews from Simcoe Composite and Port Dover together with Henry Jarowicz is in the process of earning her Level 3 coaching certification under the direction of national team coaches Al Morrow and Mike Thompson. According to Bob Ardiel, Anna’s father, “Sue’s commitment to the sport is truly amazing. She’s always there for the kids!”
Ardiel will be heading to Florida in early December to begin training with Kentucky crews and start school in early January.
