HIGH SCHOOL ROWER RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP

Caleb McCleary a Grade 10 student from Assumption College who trains with the Silver Lake Rowing Club competitive program has accepted a high school scholarship to attend the prestigious Shawnigan Lake School in British Columbia. 

Caleb was introduced to rowing by his father a public school teacher in Burford who began an indoor rowing program at his public school. This program has subsequently spread to include local public schools in Norfolk County. Caleb joined Silver Lake Rowing Club’s youth rowing program during the summer of 2007 under the guidance of Laura Fisher and Ross Fairley. In 2008, Caleb participated in the club rowing program at Silver Lake under coach Sue Fairley and continued to train under her direction through the fall and winter. Caleb caught the eye of coaches at Shawnigan Lake when he placed second at the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships held in Toronto in February and first at the Ontario Indoor Rowing Championships held at Ridley College in St. Catharines in March.

After winning the provincial championships, Caleb was invited to Shawnigan Lake School to meet the rowing coaches and athletes, He participated in rowing practices with Shawnigan Lake crews in British Columbia  and was subsequently offered to attend the school and join their rowing program beginning in April. According to Fairley, “This has all happened so fast. But Caleb is a very focused athlete who shows considerable potential in the sport of rowing. He worked hard this winter and earned this opportunity. We wish him well.”
