Rowing Canada awards grant to Silver lake rowing club
The Silver Lake Rowing Club has received a grant from Rowing Canada Aviron to support the development of youth rowing in Norfolk County.
Silver Lake was one of twelve rowing clubs from across Canada selected. The funding will enable the club to broaden an existing indoor rowing program that targets elementary schools. According to Dave Wilson Program Coordinator – Elementary Indoor Rowing with the Silver Lake Rowing Club “We’re calling our program: YRow? It’s Elementary. We’ve been able to purchase four more indoor rowing machines with RCA’s funding which means we can expand the program into more elementary schools in Norfolk County.”
According to Silver Lake Rowing Club President Jim Dover “I believe one of the reasons our project proposal was selected was because of the number of elementary school students from Norfolk County participating at the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships the last couple of years. Rowing Canada could see we had something successful happening in Norfolk County at a young age.”
Dave Wilson has been coordinating the lending of a few indoor rowing machines to a small number of local elementary schools on behalf of SLRC the last couple of years. The indoor rowers are used by students in Grades 2 to 8. In 2010, 39 elementary school students went to CIRC from the five local elementary schools currently supported. Silver Lake also hosts a training session for students in January. An indoor rowing competition – Ergatta - is scheduled for April 24th in Port Dover. In the past, the Ergatta has had over 80 students from Grade 2 to 8 enjoying some healthy rowing and the mentorship of the club’s competitive rowers who host the event.
