Silver Lake Crews Medal at Ontario Championships
Silver Lake crews won a silver and bronze medal at the Ontario Championships held in Welland on the weekend.
In one of the most exciting races of the day, Claire Wolfe, Samy Fairley, Hannah Anderson, Kelsea Parker and Chantelle LeMoine won silver in the Under 17 Women’s Coxed Quad event. Three boats fought for second place throughout the entire 2000 meter race with Silver Lake pulling away from the pack in the final 200 meters. According to Kelsea Parker, “At the finish, we had nothing left.”
Anna Ardiel advanced to the final in the Under 23 Women’s Single event by finishing first in her heat. In the final, Ardiel placed third to capture bronze. “Anna has just returned to sculling after a season of sweep rowing with the University of Louisville” explained coach Sue Fairley. “She’s still getting used to her single again and was up against people as much as four years older. It’s great racing experience for Anna.”
Also advancing to the finals were Ross Fairley, Terry Lovegrove, Robbie Puddy and Jeff Puddy in the Under 19 Men’s Quad event where they placed fourth. Mike Veltri, Ian Edwards, Liam Ardiel and Dan Beaver also advanced to the final were they placed fifth in the Under 17 Men’s Coxed Quad event.
Fairley and Lovegrove also advanced to the semi-final in the Under 19 Men’s Double event and placed 5th in their semi-final. Also competing were Tim Haviland and JJ Ferrier, as well as Robbie and Jeff Puddy in the Under 19 Men’s Double event..
According to coach Sue Fairley, “We earned our way to the provincial finals in three events. In all five finals, we were in the race – including the three events involving the larger boats. This signals we’ve formed a good base for the future.” A select number of Silver Lake crews will continue to train over the next two weeks in preparation for the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta being held August 8th through to the 13th in St. Catharines.
