LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL ROWERS MAKE TOP TEN CLUB AT PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Eight high school rowers from Valley Heights, Assumption College, Holy Trinity, Simcoe Composite and Port Dover Composite schools attended the Ontario Indoor Rowing Championships on Sunday March 8 at Ridley College in St. Catharines. We also had 4 Silver Lake (HT, SCS and PDCS) alumni race in the university events
We had 3 high school athletes and 1 university student place in the coveted top ten placing and earn the Ontario Indoor Championships Top Ten Club t-shirt.
Caleb McCleary from Assumption College place 1st in the under 165 junior mens event with a personal best time of 6:48.4
This was the first win for a Silver Lake athlete since we started participating at Rowontario Ergatta.
Port Dover Composite had Marcus Snow placed 4th in the junior men under 150 pounds posting a personal best time of 6:59.7.
Racing for Simcoe Composite Schools Chaundra Manorome placed 6th in the senior open womens event with a personal best time of 7:34. 9.
Mike Veltri of Holy Trinity Catholic High School placed 11th in the senior men under 165pounds in a time of 6:48.6 narrowly missing top 10 by 3/10's of one second. Also racing from Holy Trinity were Zac Azzopardi in the same event scoring a personal best 7:03.6 placing 31st John Veltri raced the under 150 pound category placing 20th in a time of 7:15.7
Cody Parker and Melissa Friesen from Valley Heights also achieved personal best scores in their races.
Representing their universities, Robbie Puddy (SCS alumni) rowing for Brock university posted 6:20.7 to finish in the top ten and Terry Lovegrove (SCS alumni) rowing for Brock also posted a personal best time. Racing hard for university of Guelph was Hannah Anderson( PDCS alumni) and Tyler Wilson (SCS alumni) . All the university final placing results were not known at the time of this release.
On the Sunday before (March 1) 3 local high school students attend their very first ergatta called the Dennis Morris Novice Sprints where Travis Belanger (HT), Charlie Hollander (PDCS) and Olivia Wilson( SCS) all scored personal bests in their 1500m race.
High school crews will continue with their indoor training until the ice thaws and they can get on the water to train for the first regatta of the season which will be The Silver Lake High School Sprints that take place Saturday May 2 .
Before that Silver Lake will host an elementary ergatta on Saturday April 25 with races starting at 10am.
