Sabres Crews Medal at Mother’s Day Regatta in St. Catharines

Simcoe Composite crews came away with a silver and bronze medal at the Mother’s Day Regatta in St. Catharines on the weekend while crews from Port Dover, Valley Heights and Holy Trinity also advanced to the finals to be medal contenders.

The Senior Men’s Quad of JJ Ferrier, Dan Beaver, Liam Ardiel and Tyler Wilson earned a silver medal with a come from behind row in the final 750 meters where they rowed through Saunders Secondary School from London to gain a commanding second place finish. Kelsea Parker and Chaundra Monorome won bronze in the Junior Women’s Double event after placing second in their heat to advance to the final. Like their team mates, Parker and Monorome also moved into third place in the final stages of the race. According to coach Sue Fairley, “Our athletes learned today the value of their winter training. Their physical fitness made the difference in some grueling racing.”

Other crews advancing to the finals included Samy Fairley and Hannah Andersen from Port Dover Composite who placed fourth overall in the Senior Women’s Pair event, Robbie Puddy and Terry Lovegrove from Simcoe Composite who placed fourth overall in the Senior Men’s Double event, Val Montrose, Sandor Macsai, Brett Norman, Marc Wall and Justin Wood from Valley Heights who place fifth overall in the Senior Men’s Cox Four event and Ian Edwards from Holy Trinity who placed fourth overall in the very competitive Senior Men’s Single event. Out of a total of 12 entries, five local crews advanced to the finals.

Local high school crews will be competing next weekend in Welland at the South Niagara High School Invitational Regatta while select crews from Simcoe Composite and Port Dover are heading to Philadelphia to participate at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta – the largest high school regatta in the United States.
