LAURA FISHER SELECTED TO ROWING CANADA’S NATIONAL JUNIOR TEAM
Rowing Canada announced Friday Laura Fisher of Port Ryerse will be representing Canada as a member of the Junior Women’s Four at the FISA World Rowing Junior Championships being held in Brandenburg Germany this August.
According to Jim Dover President of the Silver Lake Rowing Club, “This is a significant accomplishment for Laura and our Club. Laura earned her way on to this crew through lots of hard work. For our Club, this confirms our athlete development model is sound. It’s also a feather in the cap of Laura’s coach Susan Fairley.”
Fisher began rowing with the Silver Lake Rowing Club in 2001 as part of the Youth Learn to Row program and camp. In 2002, she teamed with Anna Ardiel of Normandale in the Club rowing program. Ardiel and Fisher rowed the Under 17 Women’s category for several years becoming more successful each year. Two years ago both began single sculling in addition to the Double category. Fisher won the U. S. National Scholastics Junior Women’s Single Championships this year. Ardiel won the Canadian Secondary School Regatta Association Championships in the Junior Lightweight Women’s Single event. Both have one more year left in their categories.
According to Coach Susan Fairley, this is such an honour to Laura and a fantastic opportunity. We’re all so happy for her and can’t wait for the knowledge she will bring back to our Club.”
Fisher has been training in St. Catharines for the past three weeks after having gone through a selection process that began in the fall of 2004. She will leave for Germany near the end of July to continue training with Canada’s national team in preparation for the World Championships.

Canada Aviron National Junior Team
Rowing Canada Aviron announces the team for the FISA World Rowing Junior
Championships in Brandenburg, Germany this August.
"The Canadian Junior Team heading to Brandenburg involves, for the first time in
many years, composite crews that are a blend of athletes from the east and the
west, as well as the largest women's team in several years," said National
Junior Program Coordinator John Ruscitti. "Both of these initiatives are
exciting for the Canadian National Junior Program."
Young rowers up to the age of 18 compete in the Junior World Rowing
Championships. This is a great opportunity for the rowing stars of tomorrow to
experience the pressure and competition of an international world-class event,
