Ardiel Places Sixth in North American Final
Anna Ardiel of Normandale placed sixth overall in a field of 48 rowers drawn from across North America at the 123rd annual Royal Canadian Henley Regatta held in St. Catharines last week.
Ardiel placed second in her first heat and again in the semi-final in order to advance to the final held on Thursday. Ardiel was the only Ontario rower to advance to the final where she competed against scullers from as far away as British Columbia and Connecticut. Ardiel placed sixth in the final.
“What an accomplishment for Anna!” said coach Susan Fairley. “She impressed a number of people with her technique and power. She deserves to be proud of how much she has accomplished this year.” Ardiel was undefeated throughout the high school rowing season and won gold at the Canadian Secondary School Regatta Association Championships in the Senior 63 kg Women’s Single event. Ardiel placed second at the ROWONTARIO Championships in the Junior Women’s Single event but managed to advance to the finals at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta by beating the person who had won gold at the Ontario Championships.
“It was particularly touching to hear people
from other Ontario clubs wish Anna a good race as she went to launch and to
watch other scullers come over after races to congratulate her. She’s not only
earned a reputation as a strong competitor but one who everyone has come to like
as a person.”
