Silver Lake Rower Third at Henley

Out of nine entries at the Royal Canadian Henley - one of North America’s largest regattas - the Silver Lake Rowing Club had one entry advance to the final to place third overall and six crews advance to the semi-finals.

In the Under 17 Men’s Single event with over thirty competitors from across Canada and the United States, Caleb McCleary of Burford advanced to the finals by placing second in both his heat and semi-final. In the final, he placed third. McCleary narrowly missed catching second place at the end of the 2000 meter race. “I played it wrong in the first 500 meters and had to catch up to the leaders” said McCleary after the race.

In the Junior Men’s Quad event, Travis Belanger, Zac Azzopardi, Scott Fairley and Caleb McCleary also advanced from the heats to the semi-final where they placed fifth.  According to coach Susan Fairley, “We’re really proud of these guys. They approached the race with such maturity and came away with a good race under some stiff competition. It’s great to have such committed young athletes with years of development still left with the club.”

The Silver Lake Rowing Club has had at least one crew reach the final at the Henley for the past five years. According to Fairley, “Caleb’s achievement  is our best yet for a male rower at our club. And to have so many of our junior crews advance to the semis is promising for next year.”
