The Silver Lake Rowing Club started the summer rowing season with two first
place and three second place finishes at the Central Ontario Rowing Association
Regatta in Welland last Saturday.
Anna Ardiel of Normandale and Laura Fisher of Port Ryerse finished first in one of two races in the Under 19 Women’s Double category with a time of 7:45.87. Their time was a full 22 seconds faster than the other race of the day in the same category. Fisher also placed first in the Under 19 Women’s Single race with a commanding lead while Ardiel placed a close second in a separate race in the same category.
Jeff Puddy of Simcoe, placed second in one of the three races in the Under 19 Men’s single category as did Terry Lovegrove and Robbie Puddy also from Simcoe in one of three races in the Under 17 Men’s Double category. Rachel Brinkman of Port Dover and Lene Dover of Simcoe combined for a third place finish in a Senior Women’s Double race. Also competing were Jason Brinkman in the Senior Men’s Single category as well as Nick Ryerse and Jeff Puddy in the Senior Men’s Pair.
The CORA regatta in Welland is the first of three regattas designed to help crews prepare for the Ontario Championships to be held near the end of July followed by the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta held in St. Catharines during the first week in August. According to Coach Susan Fairley, “We’re putting together our best rowers from across Norfolk and Haldimand and trying to find the best combinations. For the first time in our Club’s history we had a good showing in all age groups.”
