Silver Lake Crews Continue to Row Strong In the Fall

Silver Lake Rowing Club crews have continued earning medals into the fall rowing season while competing at longer distance venues held in London and Welland in September.

At the annual Head of the Thames regatta held in London Ontario, Silver Lake crews captured two gold medals and two silver. Competing in the Junior Mens Quad event, Mike Veltri of Simcoe, Liam Ardiel of Normandale, Scott Fairley of Port Dover and Ian Edwards of Langton combined to beat four crews, including second place Detroit. “We couldn’t put together a more representative crew from Norfolk County like that if we tried” said Jim Dover Vice President, Rowing.

Meanwhile, Hannah Anderson and Samy Fairley both of Port Dover  captured silver over a 4500 meter distance with a commanding lead of more than 48 seconds over the third place finisher from London Rowing Club. Chantelle Lemoine, Kelsea Parker, Chaundra Monorome and Kristina Fraser won silver finishing just three seconds back from a South Niagara Rowing Club crew in the Junior Women’s Quad event. Kelsea, Chaundra, Hannah, Samy and coxswain Chantelle also combined together in the junior women coxed quad to win gold.

At the Head of the Welland, Ian Edwards and Terry Lovegrove placed first and third  respectively in a field of six in the Junior Men’s Single event. Liam Ardiel placed fourth and Mike Veltri placed fifth. Hanna Anderson and Samy Fairley won bronze in a filed of 10 in the Junior Women’s Double event just five seconds out of second place. In the same event, Chaundra Monorome and Kelsea Parker placed fifth just one second back from fourth place.

According to Head Coach Sue Fairley “Long distance racing in the fall is great training for next year but these rowers were just competing because they love the sport. It was a joy to take them to these regattas and great to see how well they did.”
