SCS Crew Wins Silver at Canadian Championship Regatta
Robbie Puddy and Terry Lovegrove won silver in the Senior Men’s Heavy Double event at the 62nd Annual CSSRA Regatta in St. Catharines on the weekend. Two other local high school crews from Port Dover and SCS also advanced to the finals.
Overall, 19 crews from Port Dover, Simcoe, Holy Trinity and Valley Heights participated in the Canadian championships. “We’re very proud of what our high school athletes achieved this year. This is our best showing ever at the Canadian Championships” said Jim Dover Vice President – Rowing of the Silver Lake Rowing Club. All crews from Port Dover CS and Simcoe CS advanced from their heats to the semi-finals. “Our winter training really paid off” said coach Sue Fairley. “Many of our crews passed crews in the final 800 meters to qualify. They all recognize the value of that hard work over the winter.”
Competing against the best high school crews drawn from across Canada and the United States, Puddy and Lovegrove posted the overall fastest time in both the heats and semi-finals to advance to the finals. In the final, they overtook Saunders Secondary School from London in the final 500 meters to capture second place. Chaundra Monorome and Kelsea Parker also from SCS advanced through heats and semi-finals to place sixth overall in the final in the Junior Women’s Double event. Hannah Anderson and Samy Fairley of Port Dover Composite also advanced to the finals in the Senior Women’s 63kg Pair where they placed fifth.
Other crews faced tough draws for their heats. Ian Edwards of Holy Trinity drew the toughest heat in the Senior Men’s Heavy Single event where he placed fourth and did not advance. His time would have placed him first in two other heats. Liam Ardiel of SCS also did not advance in the Junior Men’s Heavy Single though his time would have had him advance in two other heats.
This wraps up the high school rowing season but the competitive rowing season continues. Puddy, Lovegrove and Ian Edwards of Holy Trinity will be attending the Junior National Team camp time trials on Monday and Tuesday this week in an attempt to win a seat on Canada’s National Junior Team while Club rowing will be starting near the end of June. “We look forward to bring all our best rowers together for the summer to compete against other cities” said Fairley. “Our athletes are earning a lot of respect on the circuit and getting to know other rowers from other clubs. It’s all very exciting.”
