Silver Lake Scullers Show Their Strength in Welland
Silver Lake crews came away with 13 medal positions(3 gold) in 17 entries at the Central Ontario Rowing Association regatta held in Welland on Saturday.
The Silver Lake Rowing Club continued to show its strength lies in the sculling program with Robbie Puddy, Ian Edwards and Terry Lovegrove posting first, second and third place finishes respectively in the Under 19 Men’s Single event. Ian Edwards and Robbie Puddy combined later in the Under 19 Men’s Double event to place second. Puddy, Edwards and Lovegrove added Mike Veltri to compete in the Under 19 Men’s Quad to place second.
Hannah Anderson and Samy Fairley placed first in the Under 19 Women’s Pair event. Also placing first amongst the women were Kristina Frazer and Kate McMillan in the Under 17 Women’s Double event. McMillan and Frazer also combined with Chaundra Monorome and Chantelle LeMoine to place second in the Under 17 Women’s Quad event. Kayla Horvat placed second in the Under 19 Women’s Single event.
Other rowers who have advanced from the high school rowing season to the inter-city competitive club rowing season include Tyler Wilson, Liam Ardiel, Scott Fairley, Kelsea Parker, JJ Ferrier, Dan Beaver, Mike Veltri, Marcus Snow, Zach Azzopardi and John Veltri. According to head coach Sue Fairley, “We have rowers from the SCS, Port Dover and Holy Trinity high school rowing programs for the summer club rowing season. It was an opportunity for us to try some different combinations and get in a lot of racing. We even boated a men’s eight for the first time over a 2000 meter distance in our club’s history!”
The club rowing season will continue with an inter club meet in London in early July followed by regattas through to the middle of August.
