TWO LOCAL ROWERS HIT TOP TEN
Two local rowers representing Simcoe Composite and Holy Trinity high schools placed in the top ten Junior A Men’s category at the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships held in Toronto last weekend.
Robbie Puddy placed seventh overall in the Junior A Men’s event with a time of 6:33.1 beating his personal best time by 15 seconds. According to Coach Sue Fairley, “We’ve always known Robbie has had it in him and now he’s starting to see the payback of hard training. I think today’s results should encourage him.” Competing in the same category, Ian Edwards of Holy Trinity placed tenth overall with a personal best time of 6:44.0. “Ian’s relatively new to the sport of rowing. It’s quite an achievement to be in the top ten when competing against significantly more experienced athletes – including Junior National team athletes. His time can only get better before the season is out” said Fairley.
Also posting personal best times from SCS were Terry Lovegrove in the Junior A Men’s category with a time of 7:01.5 and Liam Ardiel in the Junior B Boy’s Lightweight category with a time of 7:24.7. Tyler Wilson from SCS raced in the Junior A Men’s Lightweight event with a time of 7:26.3 and Kelsea Parker – also from SCS - competed in the Junior B Girl’s category with a time of 8:19.5. “Kelsea’s personal best time of 8:11 would have placed her in the top ten” said Fairley. “But it wasn’t the best day for Kelsea. She’ll have other chances to show what we know she’s got at upcoming erg meets.”
Samy Fairley and Hanna Anderson from Port Dover CS also finished with personal bests in their categories. Fairley posted a time of 8:37.2 in the Junior A Girl’s Lightweight category while Anderson finished with a time of 8:06.5 in the Junior A Girl’s category – six seconds faster than her personal best.
Sandor Macsai of Valley Heights also did a personal best time in the Senior B Men’s Lightweight category with a time of 6:59.6.
The 23rd annual Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships attracted over 800 rowers from across Ontario and New York State getting ready for the upcoming season of on-the-water racing. At this time of year, racing is held on indoor rowing machines with computer monitors measuring each rower’s time over a 2000 meter distance.
