Three Local Rowers Selected to Represent Canada
Rowing Canada announced today that
Terry Lovegrove and Robbie Puddy of SCS and Ian Edwards of Holy Trinity have
been selected to represent Canada at this year’s CanAmMex International Regatta
being held in St. Catharines this summer. The Junior CanAmMex Regatta and
Training Camp is an annual event rotated between Mexico, United States and
Canada. Last year’s regatta was held in Mexico and
Canada won the event overall.
For many of Canada’s junior rowers, this regatta represents their first taste of
international competition representing their country. Lovegrove, Puddy and
Edwards have been participating in the Junior National Team training program
throughout the winter and competed at the Rowing Canada Junior Speed Orders in
Welland on Monday and Tuesday. Puddy placed fifth, Edwards seventh and Lovegrove
eleventh overall in the single event to be nominated to represent Canada at the
international level.
The CanAmMex serves the purpose of bringing together each country's top
developmental junior athletes, coxswains and coaches for friendly, yet high
level competition. The regatta also provides a life opportunity for its
participants and serves as a cultural experience. For many, CanAmMex will be an
important step in development toward further National Junior team or Under 23
and Senior National Team opportunities.
According to Sue Fairley Coach of the High Performance Rowing Program at the
Silver Lake Rowing Club “We’re proud that all three of our high performance
rowers have been selected to represent Canada. They’ve worked hard and are all
excellent role models for future rowers to be drawn from this area.”
