Silver Lake Medals at the Ontario Championships

The Silver Lake Rowing Club came away with a silver and bronze medal and another crew advanced to the finals to place sixth at the Ontario Championships held in Welland on the weekend.

Caleb McLeary won silver in the Under 17 Men’s Single event narrowly missing gold in an exciting finish to the wire. After leading the entire race, McLeary was overtaken by a rower from St. Catharines. Chaundra Monorome and Kristina Frazer won bronze in the Under 19 Women’s Double event narrowly missing a second place finish after being overtaken in the last 250 meters. Terry Lovegrove and Ross Fairley also advanced to the finals in the Under 23 Men’s Double where they placed sixth.

Under 19 Men’s Double: Zac Azzopardi and Scott Fairley

Under 19 Men’s Cox Four: Charlie Hollander (coxswain), Zac Azzopardi, Scott Fairley, John Veltri and Caleb McCleary

Under 19 Women’s Single: Chaundra Monorome

Under 23 Women’s Lightweight Single: Samy Fairley

Under 23 Men’s Quad: Terry Lovegrove, Mike Veltri, Tyler Wilson and Ross Fairley

Under 23 Lightweight Men’s Double: Mike Veltri and Tyler Wilson

Under 19 Men’s Quad: Travis Belanger, John Veltri, Scott Fairley and Zac Azzopardi

Over 800 athletes drawn from across Ontario and northern New York state competed at the Ontario Championships which is the last major regatta leading up to the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta held in St. Catharines. The Henley is one of the largest regattas held in North America. It is held over the course of six days during the beginning of August. Select Silver Lake crews will be participating.

According to Coach Sue Fairley, “Our crews learned what they need to work on in preparation for Henley. They also know how close they are to other crews who at the beginning of the season were much further ahead. They’ve narrowed the gap significantly and are within reach. We should see some exciting racing.”
