Indoor Rowing Season Launched
The Silver Lake Rowing Club hosted an indoor rowing clinic for local elementary school students planning to attend the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships being held at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga on Sunday February 7th.
Silver Lake Rowing Club coaches and athletes provided some basic instruction on rowing technique and strategy to over 30 students at the clinic held in Port Dover on Sunday. The day wrapped up with a fun relay where teams rowed a 750 meter distance – the current length of rowable water on Silver Lake – together with club rowers who also will be competing at the Canadian Championships. According to head coach Susan Fairley “Our athletes enjoy this event every year and they serve as good role models to the younger ones to get fit.” High school rowers began the indoor training season during the first week in January while some club rowers have been training indoors since late October.
According to Dave
Wilson teacher at Elgin Public School, “We have over 30 elementary school
students from Elgin and Teeterville who will be participating at the Canadian
Championships this year. Today, the kids got some good pointers on how to
improve their stroke. Most posted their personal best time. Some of these times
beat the bronze medal time from the Canadian Championships held last year!” Last
year local athletes came home with five gold medals.
The Silver Lake Rowing Club lends indoor rowing machines to local elementary schools and hosts a local indoor “ergatta” in April every year to promote the sport of rowing. Wilson reported that possibly as many as 10 local elementary schools will be represented at Silver Lake Indoor Rowing Championships being held in April this year.
