Norfolk County Elementary School Students Row Indoors

Approximately fifty students from Norfolk County and Burford District elementary schools competed in the Elementary School Indoor Rowing Championship sponsored by the Silver Lake Rowing Club at the Silver Lake Market in Port Dover last Saturday.

Throughout the winter, the Silver Lake Rowing Club loaned their indoor rowing machines to seven elementary schools across Norfolk County as part of their Elementary School Indoor Rowing Program. Teachers Dave Wilson of Elgin Public School and Rick McCleary of Burford District Public School have both introduced indoor rowing to their schools. Both have had sons row with the Silver Lake Rowing Club.  According to Wilson, “Indoor rowing has been a great way to promote fitness amongst our elementary school students. They enjoy participating in an activity that all are experiencing for the first time. They thrive on the immediate feedback they get on the monitors.”

Volunteers from the Silver Lake Rowing Club hosted the event with past high school and university rowers from the club coaching participants before and during racing. Funding from the Haldimand Norfolk Health Unit made it possible to promote amongst all competitors the advantages of being tobacco free. According to the Silver Lake Rowing Club’s head coach Sue Fairley who organized the event, “It was a fun day but painful to see the potential champions amongst these students and not be able to offer them on water rowing.”
