Silver Lake Crews Launch in Welland

The Silver Lake Rowing Club launched the club rowing season in Welland last weekend with the largest number of athletes participating in its history. According to coach Sue Fairley, “No first place medals but a few good races as we try to find the best combination of the best rowers we’ve drawn from local high schools.”

With a total of thirteen entries made up of doubles, quads, a single and coxed four, Silver Lake crews placed second in two races and third in three. Chaundra Manorome and Hannah Anderson as well as Chantelle LeMoine and Samy Fairley finished second in two separate Junior B Women’s Double races. Later in the day, Lemoine, Anderson, Fairley and Kelsea Parker combined in the Junior B Women’s Double race to place third just nine seconds back from second place.

Ross Fairley placed third in the fastest Junior A Men’s Single race of the day just five seconds outside of second place. The Junior B Men’s Quad of Liam Ardiel, Dan Beaver, Ian Edwards and Mike Veltri had a frustrating row according to coach Fairley. “They’re capable of much better but missed a few strokes and fell behind too early” said Fairley. “They may surprise a few people at next week’s regatta.”=

Other rowers included Jake Martens, Brett Norman, JJ Ferrier, Tim Haviland, Robbie Puddy, Terry Lovegrove, Shannon Page and Kate McMillan. The Club rowing season will continue throughout the summer with regattas in London, St. Catharines and Welland.
